Music and Stress
Stress is something that all of us are all too familiar with, especially during times like these, but also in instances where we are not suffering from a pandemic: exams, meetings, speaking or performing in front of an audience (among other situations).
So how can music help us to manage this stress?
Music has the ability to influence our emotions and our mood, the tempo of the music being one of the most important factors. It can make us happy, sad, confident, focused, relaxed, energised - the list goes on!
In terms of stress, music with a slower tempo can induce a relaxed mental and physical state which enables us to relieve stress and to relax; it helps to slow your pulse and heart-rate as well as lowering your blood pressure and causing a decrease in stress hormones (i.e. adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephine). Stress is associated with elevated heart-rate, pulse and blood pressure so logically, if slow and calming music gives the opposite effect, we can assume it results in the opposite feeling of relaxation.
Additionally, music is able to take your mind off of things and acts as a distraction from any stress inducing thoughts you may be experiencing (for example, singing has been found to release stress and tension) and thus helps you to achieve a more relaxed state of mind.
Stress can however be important if especially in instances when you're trying to meet a deadline and so it is probably best not to try and reduce this too much unless it is unbearable; I left my epq (extended project qualification) until the weekend before and without that stress there is very little chance I would have been able to finish it in time for the deadline if I had been in a calm and collected state!
