Why the Older Christmas Songs are that Much Better
Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the same old songs (the songs from before 2010) played on loop throughout the entirety of the holiday. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without "Fairytale of New York" playing in the background of the Christmas dinner. Without "Last Christmas" blasting in the living room, the family hanging the baubles up on your tree. Without "Rocking around the Christmas Tree" playing while carefully wrapped paper is torn off presents. Without "All I want for Christmas is you" playing on the radio on the drive home. To put it simply, Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without the old songs which we play on loop year after year after year.
But very few newer Christmas songs are as popular as the older classic ones we've all grown to love, and those that are follow a similar formulaic pattern as the older ones; mention of similar themes like snow and home and love and parties and family, and sleigh bells, and choirs in the background, and the typical major key littered with minor chords or a momentary change into minor key only to revert back to the major soon thereafter.
Sadly still, the new songs never seem to catch on, or have the same "Christmassy" feel that these older songs have; why is that?
Nostalgia is probably the most prevalent reason. Music can be hugely associated with a million different feelings and situations, so naturally Christmas songs are going to be associated with that festive feeling, seeing the whole family and sat around a table piled high with turkey or ham or whatever takes your fancy, and roast potatoes, and gravy, and carrots and then the Christmas pudding at the end of the meal lit up like the sky on bonfire night, or whatever Christmas means to you. New Christmas music just isn't associated with all these things, and what is Christmas without all these things? That's why the older Christmas songs are able to make us swell up with that warm and fuzzy feeling of nostalgia that just isn't provided by the newer Christmas songs.
